"Cheap Food"

"Cheap food is an illusion, there is no such thing as cheap food. The real cost of the food is paid somewhere--and if it isn't paid at the cash register, it is charged to the environment, it is charged to the public purse in the form of subsidies and it's charged to your health."

-Michael Pollan, in Fresh

"Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."

Genesis 3: 17-19

That's totally true. We heard a podcast about trying to measure the true cost of a hamburger and though it's awfully tough to nail down they said the minimum is around $50 when you factor in environmental and health effects.
